Automated nucleic acid extraction for up to 24 samples
The Nucleic Acid Extraction Workstation includes OT-2 Robot, Pipettes, Tips, Labware, Heater-Shaker Module (optional), Temperature Module, and Custom Protocol Development
With the OT-2 Nucleic Acid Extraction Workstation, you can automate your magnetic bead-based nucleic acid isolation and purification workflows for up to 24 samples. Configure your workstation with an on-deck Heater-Shaker if your protocol requires heating and agitation for lysis, or without a Heater-Shaker if your protocol does not require heating or agitation.
The OT-2 Nucleic Acid Extraction Workstation can support the following workflow steps:
Lysis via heat and/or agitation
Magnetic bead mixing and separation
The OT-2 Nucleic Acid Extraction Workstation includes all the hardware and consumables you need to perform nucleic acid extractions. It comes with Opentrons’ protocol development service, which provides you with a customized protocol unique to your assay. You’ll also enjoy free access to the Opentrons Protocol Designer, Python API, and Protocol Library.

Opentrons offers 2 purchasing options for our Nucleic Acid Extraction Workstation. These two options are WITH a Heater-Shaker Module and WITHOUT a Heater-Shaker Module. All other components of the workstation are the same.
Users with nucleic acid extraction workflows containing heating and/or agitation for lysis should choose the Workstation option which includes a Heater-Shaker Module. If you have any questions on the option that would work best for your lab, one of our Automation Specialists would be happy to advise.
Our Nucleic Acid Extraction Workstation can fully automate extraction processes up to 24 samples per run. Increased throughputs are possible, however manual steps (e.g. swapping out tip racks) would be required.
One of our Automation Specialists would be happy to walk through the set-up that would work best for your lab’s throughput requirements via a quick consultation.
We’ve validated protocols for:
ZymoBIOMICS Kit
Beckman Coulter Life Sciences RNAdvance Viral Kit
Omega Bio-Tek Mag-Bind® TotalPure NGS
You can browse all of our community’s Nucleic Acid Extraction protocols within our Protocol Library. Don’t see a protocol for the kit your lab is using? We offer a couple different options for creating your protocol. Additionally, you can leverage our team of engineers for a custom protocol development.
Out of the box, the OT-2 can support any automation-compatible, ANSI/SLAS compliant well plates, plus a wide range of snap-cap and screw-cap tubes up to a 50 mL conical with our 4-in-1 Tube Rack. You can see the full range of supported labware in our Labware Library.
You do not need to know how to code to use the Opentrons platform. Protocols can be created using Opentrons’ plug-and-play protocol design tools. We also have an Applications Engineering team that can build custom protocols for you.
You can find our community’s collection of OT-2 protocols within our Protocol Library. Feel free to search the library for a protocol that matches your lab’s workflows!

Due to the open-source nature of the robot, many of our users have found success integrating the OT-2 with third party lab equipment.
Integrations such as these would be a DIY project taken on by your lab, and would not fall under the scope of the Opentrons Support team.
The OT-2 has the following certifications: CE, FCC, NRTL, ISO 9001, CB
Note that the robot is not IVD or GMP certified/validated
Labs within the Opentrons community have installed the OT-2 pipetting robot in biological safety cabinets (as well as in inert atmosphere glove boxes), including Labconco’s Logic Vue Class II enclosures and Baker’s AeroPROTECT 360 enclosures. We recommend you cross-check the dimensions of the OT-2 with those of your chosen biological safety cabinet.
Try the OT-2 in your lab today and take advantage of protocols designed for sharing and editing.
